Top 5 London Attractions

When planning your London holidays, don't forget to plan a visit to each of the top five attractions in London. These attractions draw in millions of people each year, and each offers its own unique charm. London holidays simply would not be the same without seeing the most talked about sites in this beautiful and historic city.

1. Buckingham Palace
Built in 1705 for the Duke of Buckingham, Buckingham Palace is well known as the home of the British Monarch. The State Rooms of the Palace are open to the public during the summer months only, but even if you can't get inside Buckingham Palace, you can view the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard, which takes place daily in the summer and every other day in the winter. The Queen's Gallery, which hosts the Royal Art Collection, is open daily throughout the year.

2. The London Eye
Also known as The Millennium Wheel, The London Eye welcomes an average of 3.5 million visitors each year. This 443 ft. tall ferris wheel looks over Jubilee Gardens and the River Thames. It was built in 1999 to celebrate the new millennium.

3. Palace of Westminster
The Palace of Westminster is commonly referred to as the Houses of Parliament and is the meeting place of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Palace itself has undergone a great many tragedies and reconstructions, including a fire that destroyed much of the earliest building in 1512 and a bombing in 1941 during World War II. Now, the Palace of Westminster is a famed attraction due to its clock tower, Big Ben. A limited number of visitors are allowed inside the Palace as well.

4. Tate Modern
With 4.7 million visitors annually, the Tate Modern is the most visited modern art gallery in the world. The building itself was completed in 1963, but the works inside its walls date from 1900 to the present. Some of the exhibits on display include works by Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol.

5. The Tower of London
An estimated 2 million people each year visit Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, an 11th century castle better known as The Tower of London. The Tower, which is home to the Crown Jewels, is arguably most infamously known for its prison. Anne Boleyn, Sir Walter Raleigh, Guy Fawkes, and The Princes of the Tower, Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury, are among the most noted prisoners of the Tower of London.

London holidays can quickly fill with the numerous sites to see. Along with these top five attractions, one should not forget the many museums, parks, buildings, and monuments that are spread throughout the wondrous city.
